Thailand Long Time Blog Page 3

As most of the people who read this blog are probably long distance flyers this is a reminder and warning about deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is not medical advice. It is just something that might perhaps prompt you into finding more information regarding the DVT condition. Speak to a doctor of medicine for medical advice.

Just thought I would post this. Make of it what you will.

I was sat in the front of a beer bar in Chiang Rai the other night having a quiet beer. There was just 3 customers including me and 2 bar girls both of whom knew me. It was quite early, about 7.30pm.

As I sat there I noticed a car pull up outside in the road. There was a large teddy bear was on the back seat. I thought nothing of it. The car drove off and parked a few yards down the road.

An unusual law in Thailand is that a car cannot park at the side of the road facing oncoming traffic. Even in a marked parking bay, as in the image,

It would appear that Thailand is 6th in a world league table for generating plastic waste. I am not at all surprised.

I think all farang that stay in Thailand experience things Thais do that they cannot understand. Whether it is raising prices when the number of customers coming in bars subsides, or bar girls raising their prices for similar reasons. But there is one thing that truly does amaze me.

Just a reminder to all the ex pats in Thailand who crave after a good book to read that is written in English. Yes, some Thai book shops have a few, but the books they do stock are expensive and a pain in the proverbial to find. It is much easier to use a kindle and download  ebooks from Amazon

They might not deliver an actual kindle to Thailand, but you can download a free app to your mobile, tablet or desktop that acts as a kindle.

UPDATE: 20 August, 2019 - this law came into effect today - to report abusers who smoke in the home call 1300.

I appreciate that laws in Thailand are often ignored or not enforced but I find it hard to see how this one will ever be enforced or followed.

A law will come into effect on 20th August 2019 making it an offence to endanger health of others living under the same roof with second-hand smoke.

Chiang Rai is to host a Global Running Summit and a half marathon between 4th and 7th July, this year (2019). Put the dates in your diary or Google Calendar.

This is part of a national strategy to use sport as an economic driver for cities and communities.
