Two Girls Working at Smile Bar

Having been in Chiang Rai a few months I quickly realised that the bar scene revolving around P4P and bar girls is quite limited. But it does exist.

Chiang Rai is nothing like Bangkok and certainly nothing like Pattaya.

In fact when it comes to nightlife you will not find anything similar to Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy. What beer bars you will find are similar to the older bars on Sukhumvit 22 in Bangkok but not as lively.

Bars in Jetyod Road, Chiang Rai

These bars are mainly in Jetyod Road in the town centre. But don't expect them to be heaving with customers and girls. They are generally quiet but some get more busy late in the evening. A couple of old bars that have been there decades are open in the afternoon. The best known early opening  bar is Cat Bar which is definitely not P4P. Most other bars open after 5 or 6pm.

Everything is low key and not 'in your face' as it is in some areas of Bangkok. The bars are normally quiet until late into the evening, with most P4P girls coming to work after 7 or 8 pm. Depending on the level of business, some bars stay open most of the night behind closed shutters, but normal closing time is 12 midnight.

If you are looking for P4P get a feel for the bar and girls first. Not all bars in Jetyod Road have P4P available!

As for available girls the quality varies. All the girls I have seen were over 30 years old, and some look it.

A lot of the girls are experienced in dealing with customers so be on your guard; do not think that because Chiang Rai is not Pattaya or Bangkok the girls will be different. Most are not and do not forget the girls who work in the P4P bars are working

A good percentage are from the Akhar hill tribe, are Christian and very friendly.

The best in my view are Smile Bar, 69 Bar, Lam Yai Bar, Nena Bar (now Secret Bar) and Chicken Bar. The amount of P4P available in these bars is directly proportional to the number of girls who turn up for work.  Another popular bar is Peace Bar but it is not my type of bar. A few of the bars have pool tables if you like to shoot.

If you are interested, there is also a bar in one of the side roads (sois) off Jetyod Road, called 'Boys Bar' - I have no idea what goes on inside it as I have never been.

There is also Hangover Bar which is a popular place for ex - pats. It is about 70 m from the main part of Jetyod Road where it turns at a 90 degree angle, at the end of the road furthest away from the Clock Tower. The 90 degree turn is where the temple is.

As with most bar area in towns across Thailand there are girls walking around selling everything from roses to peanuts. Chiang Rai is not an exception. But there are very few of them, all are pleasant and not pushy.

Here is a map of Jetyod Road showing the locations of the bars.

There are 3 massage shops in Jetyod Road, and a lot in what is known as 'Soi Massage' that runs off it. There are also quite a few in the main road through the town that runs parallel with Jetyod Road at the other end of 'Soi Massage' (P

Many of the massage shops in 'Soi Massage' have staff who offer extra services for a fee.

By the way, there are zero 'a go go' bars that I have found in Chiang Rai. Apparently there used to be, but they closed down a few years ago. I have heard that there is a Thai style go go bar somewhere in the city but I don't know if this is a myth or real.
